Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel is the narrow passage in the wrist through which the nerves, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels pass. Sometimes the nerve that runs through the carpal tunnel is compressed at the wrist joint due to the buildup of pressure on the median nerve and tendons. This is carpal tunnel syndrome. It can be very painful and uncomfortable, affecting every part of your life, from driving, to grocery shopping, to typing on the computer.

What causes carpal tunnel syndrome? Several different factors are involved. Those with hormonal problems and other medical conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, etc. are more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome. The same goes for those who have a cyst or tumor in the hand or forearm and people who have had serious fractures or sprains in the past.

Carpal Tunnel Symptoms

Common carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms include:

  • Numbness or pain in your hand, wrist or forearm (sometimes enough to wake you up during the night)
  • Occasional tingling in your hand
  • Aching pain in your forearm
  • Pain that gets worse when you are gripping something or flexing your wrist
  • Stiffness in your fingers when you get up in the morning

What should I wear to acupuncture sessions?

You will want to be as comfortable as possible during treatments. It’s important that the acupuncturist is able to access various points of the body. Wearing loose clothing is helpful and allows your acupuncturist to easily administer treatment. Either wear comfortable clothing or bring a change of clothing with you to make treatments as comfortable as possible.

“Relieve your stress with an alternative and natural method: Acupuncture

Will I be able to relax during treatments?

Acupuncturists can provide you with a relaxed setting to receive acupuncture treatments. Often, they may lower the lights, and turn on a sound machine and even a heat lamp. Acupuncture can actually help to relieve stress. Because of this, many people may find that once needles are placed they are able to fully relax and may even fall asleep.
